Driving through Sedona, Arizona, we were originally planning on staying on some free land outside of town. Unfortunately, when we arrived, it was much harder to find than expected. Since it was getting dark, we headed back into town and saw a Safeway that had been recommended as a place to park overnight.
Since this was one of our first times staying overnight in a parking lot, we checked it out first. Reassured by the sight of a couple other #vanlifers in the lot, we stopped and spent the night.
We actually had a decent night stay. For a parking lot, it was not very noisy, which was a surprise. Since we were by a Safeway, it was also easy to pop in and grab a quick bite to eat (some pre-made sandwiches from their deli). When we woke up in the morning, using the restrooms inside was simple, and we were easily able to head out onto our next destination.
All in all, not a bad place to park overnight. But, it does look like they keep an eye on the lot, since we did see one van (which looked like it had been there for a bit) with a ticket on its windshield. We don’t know if we were just lucky or if that was a longer term visitor.
Like with any parking lot, it can be a bit iffy (especially since old favorites Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel are prohibiting overnight parking in a lot of their lots now). The best bet is to ask inside (which we forgot to) before attempting to spend the night.
