#Vanlife comes with unexpected bumps in the road. It’s a given. Sometime, at some point, your ride will break down. It’s inevitable. So, you try to do as much as you can in preventive measures to insure that you won’t be caught off guard. You change your oil. You check your brake fluid. You keep your antifreeze levels high. And you find a way to monitor your tires.
Thankfully, there are a lot of TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitor Systems) out there. Sure, there are ones that are super fancy. But, if you’re trying to find one that won’t break the bank – but doesn’t skimp on the features too much – you’re looking for the Tymate M7-3 TPMS.
After an initial charge via the included USB, the Tymate M7-3 TPMS monitor runs entirely off of solar. No worry about replacing batteries – or having those batteries fail on you at an inopportune time. You attach the sensors to each tire’s valve stem, and the monitor automatically recognizes them, and tells you the air pressure and temperature of each tire. And it comes with 5 different alarms, to alert you if something is wrong, whether it’s a fast leak, high or low pressure, high temperature or low voltage.
The sensors themselves are super easy to install on the valve stems of your tires. They seem to be super secure on there, so you won’t have to worry about one falling off. There is no lock on them, however, so they could be stolen. But, they are small enough that most thieves shouldn’t even notice them.
That’s not to say the Tymate M7-3 TPMS isn’t without it’s faults. Since it’s cheaper than a lot of the other systems out there, it does cut back in areas. Unfortunately, the instruction book is one of those areas. It’s a bit difficult to figure out how to initially set up the monitor, but once you do it, you don’t have to worry about that ever again. Even if it dies (that happened to us after we hid it behind our window shade for several weeks), the settings are still remembered when you power it back up.
And, if you have more than 4 tires to monitor, you’ll need to buy more sensors, as the Tymate M7-3 TPMS only comes with four. They do sell these sensors separately, but at $30 each, you’d probably save money going with a different system.
Currently, the Tymate M7-3 TPMS is listed at $80 on Amazon. They also have a new version that has come out since we bought ours, the M12-3, which is listed at the same price (no idea if the newer one is better or not).
All in all, we are pretty happy with our purchase, since it gives us a little more peace of mind when it comes to our tires. And, as we all know, tires are a very important part of keeping our #vanlife journey on the road.
