Some talented graffiti artists’ work is on display alongside the main street in Shiprock, New Mexico.
On the Navajo Nation, the small town of Shiprock, New Mexico (famous for the large rock it’s named after, and its proximity to the Four Corners) has a surprise: it apparently boasts some talented graffiti artists.
And how do we know that? Because within the town (across from Nizhoni Park), there is a set of empty buildings on the side of the main street. While they used to be a gas station, a hardware store and a video rental store, they now host some rather impressive graffiti art on their walls. Back in 2016, we ended up taking pictures of all the wall art on the site.
Since they are painted over frequently to address the issues or concerns of the time, these are no longer the current graffiti art on the site. So take a look back, with our photos above and below, and, while they may not be as current today, many are still important to remember. That’s especially true of remembering the deaths of Navajo Nation police officers Alex Yazzie and Darrell Curley, and the murder of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike.
