Sunset View Campground

When we set off again for Take Two of our full-time vanlife (see About Us for more details), our first first overnight was at a Kayenta Burger King. While there, we heard about a free campground inside the Navajo National Monument that was only about a half hour away. We decided to check it out before moving on – and ended up staying there for days. In fact, the only reason we moved on was because we were starting to run out of food (we hadn’t stocked up much before leaving).

With a free campground, there is usually something wrong. With no entrance fee to the Monument, we weren’t expecting much. What we discovered, however, is the place is amazing! Sunset View Campground is easily the quietest place we’ve ever stayed in our travels. Despite spots available for 24 vans (most of which filled up each night we were there), the abundant trees surrounding each spot means guests barely glimpse views of other guests, much less hear them.

Toss in decent flush toilets, ample places to dump trash, and even an outdoor sink – not to mention a picnic table and a grill at each parking spot – Sunset View Campground had so much going for it that it was hard for us to leave. Quiet, peaceful and free, the only thing this place was missing was a shower! Sure, it’s a good idea to pack extra toilet paper, since the refills for the bathroom occur a little less frequently than needed, but aside from that, this place is darn near perfect – at least when we visited in early October of 2023.

We just wish there was a Wal-Mart nearby. The only shopping at all is in downtown Kayenta, at a very expensive Basha’s (about 30 minutes away). So if you’re planning on going, make sure you stock up before you arrive. Otherwise, like us, you’ll regret you hadn’t done so beforehand.
